appellation st. helena
St. Helena has been an integral part of Napa Valley grape growing and wine making for over 125 years now, and we feel very fortunate to be located within this special appellation. Not only is St. Helena an appealing and thriving community, but the distinctiveness of its terroir was recognized in 1995 when it was granted appellation status. A number of years ago, a group of us within the appellation determined that it was time to communicate what it is that distinguishes St. Helena as a premier winegrowing area. We re-established a group—originally founded in 1875 and called the “St. Helena Viticultural Society”—to help define and bring attention to this worthy appellation.
Many prominent wineries made St. Helena their home in the early days of winegrowing in Napa County, among them Beringer, Charles Krug, Louis Martini, Christian Brothers, Sutter Home…the list goes on. In addition, there are a high number of pre-Prohibition wineries located in our appellation, Spottswoode being among them—this community truly was a focal point when vineyards and wineries were first being established in Napa Valley.
We are excited about the momentum we have built thus far, and we are also excited to share our mission with you.
