2010 Field Book Syrah (Griffin’s Lair Vineyard, Sonoma Coast)

The Wine Advocate, Antonio Galloni

Black cherries, menthol, asphalt, cloves and chocolate literally explode from the glass as Spottswoode’s 2010 Syrah Griffin’s Lair Vineyard shows off its considerable personality and class. At once juicy, but also quite wild in style, the 2010 is extroverted and racy from start to finish. Varietal notes abound in this full-bodied, intense Syrah. Anticipated maturity: 2013–2020. 92 points (April, 2013)

International Wine Cellar, Steve Tanzer

Bright ruby. Captivating, varietally expressive aromas of blueberry, candied black cherry, violet face powder and smoke complicated by flinty minerality. Plush and lightly saline, but kept fresh and firm by nicely integrated acidity. This energetic, pure midweight finishes with initially suave tannins that turned a bit dusty with aeration. A very promising new bottling from Spottswoode. 91 points (May/June, 2013)
