2013 Field Book Syrah

We are very excited to present this vintage of Field Book, our special Northern Rhone-style Syrah crafted exclusively for our Top Spott! and Spott On! Club members. The name Field Book reflects the exhaustive search and notes recorded as we sought a stellar vineyard site perfectly suited to the growing of Syrah. We sourced our grapes again this year from Griffin’s Lair Vineyard, which is situated on a windswept hill in the Petaluma Gap in the southernmost part of the Sonoma Coast appellation. This 22-acre site is influenced by early morning fog coming off the San Francisco Bay, followed by warm sun exposure and late-afternoon wind. This moderate growing region produces intensely flavored wines that are deeply colored and full-bodied, with mouth-filling tannins, a silky texture, and natural, fresh acidity. Field Book is produced in extremely limited quantities—only 126 cases are available of the 2013 vintage!

Displaying Spottswoode’s trademark elegance, this classic, cool-climate Syrah is an exuberant California interpretation of a Northern Rhone style, co-fermented with 7% Viognier to enhance its floral aromatics. The 2013 Field Book is fragrant and lively—a genuine expression of the vintage and the famed Griffin’s Lair Vineyard, recognized by aficionados as a prime site for growing Syrah. Black cherry, rose potpourri, and white pepper fill the nose and give way to an intense and deep palate of rhubarb, blueberry, and baking spices of cinnamon and clove. Powdery, structured tannins provide length, focus and drive. A nicely weighted and balanced wine with a long, juicy finish.

“Although Spottswoode is best known for the superb Cabernet Sauvignons, the estate also does quite well with their Syrah.”
