1882
The estate that is now Spottswoode began with George Schonewald, a German immigrant who came to the Napa Valley around 1870. He quickly learned the hotel business, soon running some of the finest hotels in northern California including the Del Monte in Monterey. By 1882 Schonewald and his wife, Catherine, purchased 31 fertile acres at the foot of the Mayacamas mountain range in the community of St. Helena, intending to make this their summer home. The Schonewalds planted 17 acres of wine grapes on the property, which they christened “Esmeralda,” which means “Emerald” in Spanish.
