Estate Sauvignon Blanc “Mary’s Block”
2023

Through a rare blend of grace and grit, Mary Weber Novak quietly established Spottswoode as one of Napa Valley’s finest first-growth family wine estates. In 1984, just two years after the inaugural vintage of our Cabernet Sauvignon, Spottswoode began pioneering Sauvignon Blanc from its estate – well before this grape was recognized as one of the finest white varietals. It was Mary’s favorite wine.

The original block was removed after the 1990 harvest due to phylloxera. With Mary’s enthusiastic encouragement, a unique 1.07-acre parcel was planted in 2000 in the southwestern corner of the vineyard adjacent to the banks of Spring Creek. It was named Mary’s Block in her honor, and we have bottled this special Estate Sauvignon Blanc since 2016. The resulting wine is a pure, singular expression of Sauvignon Blanc from our estate vineyard.

Just 162 cases of 750 ml and 30 cases of magnums of the 2023 vintage were bottled, exclusively for our Spott! members. As you enjoy this special estate wine, please know that 20% of your purchase is donated to the Land Trust of Napa County, a land-conservation organization the Novak family has long respected and supported.

Winemaker Notes: The 2023 Mary’s Block Sauvignon Blanc is layered and dynamic with aromas and flavors of white peach, grapefruit, Asian pear, cassis bud and vanilla meringue. The palate is round and balanced with a lemony acidity. There is an enticing floral edge and the sweetness of the oak softens the acids. The cooler vintage set the tone for expressive citrus and floral notes that offer beauty now and which will continue to evolve with more time in your cellar.

Our mom loved serving friends and family her favorite wine, Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc. As a tribute to her, we offer this limited estate bottling, made purely from her namesake block in our family vineyard. Please join in our toast to Mary and a life well lived.
