Field Book Spring Creek Estate Red Wine

Since 2007, our series of Field Book wines have embodied the extensive notes taken as we sought interesting vineyard sites from which to produce compelling wines that express their unique terroirs. In 2016 we didn’t have to search further than next door, when our neighbor asked us to farm their Spring Creek Vineyard. We jumped at the opportunity and entered into a long-term lease! This historic vineyard, first planted in the 1880s, borders the southern edge of our estate and gives us the opportunity to explore farming and winemaking with heritage California varietals like Petite Sirah, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, Napa Gamay and Mourvedre, as well as to trial other varieties like Touriga Nacional, Manseng Noir, Tinta Cao, Falanghina and Assyrtiko. The Spring Creek Vineyard thus speaks to both the past and future of winegrowing in Napa Valley as we adapt to the effects of climate change, through what we plant.

This tiny vineyard – only one hectare (2.2 acres) – is composed of benchland bale clay and alluvial soils, and enjoys the same cooling maritime breezes that come through the gap between Spring Mountain and the Mayacamas Range and pass over the Spottswoode Estate Vineyard.

The 2021 and 2022 harvests were both drought-impacted and equally tiny, and blended together they produced a powerful, concentrated wine. We are excited to present this year’s offering of Field Book Spring Creek Estate Red Wine. This wine is intensely flavored and deeply colored. It is plush and mouth-coating with bright acidity and juicy black and red fruit. Only 153 cases of this vintage were bottled.

Winemaker Notes: Dark, concentrated, and intense purple, the Spring Creek Estate Red Wine is rich, inky, and intense while perfumed and pretty. Fresh black and blue berries offer ripeness balanced by great energy. Earthy with notes of hazelnut, floral components, and leather minerality. This is a powerful wine with many years of life ahead!
