Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc

2010 Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc

Wine Spectator, Maryann Worobiec

Offers a supple texture, with honeysuckle and orange blossom scents that give way to lemon-lime, green apple and green papaya flavors. There’s a good balance between the elegance and intense, juicy flavors. Drink now. 90 points (August 31, 2012).

It might seem unusual to choose the white wine from this legendary Cabernet house, but Sauvignon Blanc is owner Mary Novak’s preferred wine, and Spottswoode has turned it into an art form. A mix of six vineyards in two counties, fermented in a variety of vessels, brings world-class density to flavors of lemon, vanilla and apricot tart, with pitch-perfect acidity from a racy vintage. Tasting Notes: A blend of 61% Sauvignon Blanc, 36% Sauvignon Musque, and 3% Semillion, this wine has a light greenish gold hue in the glass. It smells of kiwi and green apple with a whiff of fresh bright wet stone. In the mouth, green apple and wet stone flavors zip around on the back of excellent acidity, and linger with a hint of yeasty woodiness in the finish. 14.1% alcohol. Score: around 9. Pale green tinged straw. Pungent, complex nose offers scents of citrus peel, grapefruit, chlorophyll and white pepper. Then supple and seamless in the mouth, with enticing floral lift to the white peach and citrus flavors. The fresh peach quality carries through on the brisk finish. Long on personality. 91 points (May 2012).
